Applied geneticists typically have knowledge of biochemistry, agronomy, botany, entomology, food processing, forestry, pathology, microbiology, physiology, and statistics, among other fields. Applied genetics aims to improve the quality of food and fibre products, increase the economic efficiency of any given product, and reduce the detrimental effects on the environment of food and fibre production.

Molecular biology is the study of the chemical and physical structure of biological macromolecules.
